How to change a live subscription in Stripe

🧾 How to Update an Existing Subscription in Stripe

Once a subscription has been created in Onespot Payments, you can easily adjust the billing amount or payment method without canceling and recreating it. This is especially helpful if a family’s tuition changes or a correction is needed for future billing cycles.

⚡ Step-by-Step: Update a Subscription

1. Open Administrative Superpowers

Go to your Onespot app and click the ⚡ Lightning Bolt to open your admin tools.

2. Locate the Customer

Select All Members, then choose the member whose subscription you’d like to update (e.g., Samuel Buchanan.

3. Open Their Payment Profile in Stripe

Under the parent or payer’s name, click View in Stripe. This opens the customer’s Stripe profile, where subscriptions are managed.

4. Edit the Subscription

In Stripe:

  • Scroll to the Subscriptions section.
  • Locate the active subscription (e.g., “Tuition 2025–2026”).
  • Click the ✏️ Edit (pencil) icon next to the amount.

5. Adjust the Subscription Details

  • Update the price (e.g., change $1,500/month to $1,000/month).
  • Review or update the payment method if needed.
  • Save your changes.

6. Confirm the Update in Onespot

After saving in Stripe, the new amount will sync to Onespot automatically.

You’ll see the updated price reflected in both:

  • The parents’ payment dashboard
  • The child’s subscription view under “Active Subscriptions”

đź’ˇ Why Use This Feature?

Updating a subscription instead of canceling it ensures billing continuity, accurate reporting, and fewer manual errors. Parents will automatically see the correct amount on their next invoice, and all previous billing history stays intact.

🧠 Notes & Tips

  • You can change billing amounts and payment methods, but not the billing interval (e.g., from monthly to yearly).
  • Updates apply to the next scheduled invoice, not the current one.
  • If the parent’s saved payment method changes, Stripe will automatically use the new one for the next charge.
