How to Change or Add a Parent’s Payment Method in Stripe

There may be times when a parent asks you to change their default payment method on file, such as switching from a credit card to a bank account to avoid processing fees. While parents can make this change themselves, you can also do it for them through Stripe. 💳

Below is a step-by-step guide to updating or adding a payment method for a parent.

🧾 Before You Begin:

⚠️ Parents must first exist as customers in Stripe, meaning they must have received an invoice or made at least one payment, before you can update their payment details.

🔁 Change a Parent’s Default Payment Method

  1. Go to your All Members screen in the admin dashboard of the app.
  2. Click on the parent’s name whose payment method you'd like to update.
  3. Select “View in Stripe” to open their customer profile in Stripe.

Scroll to the “Payment Methods” section.

You’ll see all payment methods on file (e.g., credit card, bank account).

    To switch the default method:

    • Click “Set as Default” next to the payment method you want to prioritize (e.g., Bank Account).
    • The selected method will now be used automatically for future invoices.

➕ Add a New Payment Method (Card or Bank Account)

  1. In the parent’s Stripe customer profile, click the ➕ Add button near the Payment Methods section.
  2. Choose whether to add a Card or Bank Account.
  3. Input the details only if the parent has given you permission (e.g., by phone).
  4. Once added, you can also set the new method as the default.

📝 This feature is useful when:

  • A parent calls and wants to update their card info
  • They want to pay by bank account instead of a credit card
  • Their current card has expired
