Seeing Who Has Read a Message in a Group Chat
If you run a group chat or activity feed, you can see who has read each message and how caught up each member is. This helps you know whether an important update has reached everyone.
👀 Who Can See Read Status
- Chat managers of group chats started with the New Chat button
- Editors of a group chat or activity feed that lives on a screen
- School admins with the All Members permission, even if they haven't joined the chat
Regular members can't see who has read a message, and admins who only have permission to edit screens can't either.
💡 Members of group chats started with New Chat see a short note in Chat Info letting them know that chat managers and admins can see read status.
✔️ How to See Who Read the Latest Message
Under the newest message in the chat, you'll see Seen by with how many people have read it, like "Seen by 2 of 4," along with small pictures of the most recent readers. Once everyone has read it, it says Seen by everyone.

📋 How to See Who Read Any Message
- Long-press the message (on the web, click the … button).
- Tap Seen by.
A sheet opens with a preview of the message, a progress bar, and two lists:
- Seen: everyone who has read it
- Not yet: everyone who hasn't, with how many messages they haven't read (like "14 unread") or No reads yet

📊 How to Check How Caught Up Everyone Is
Tap the ⓘ info icon to open Chat Info, then scroll down to Read Status. You'll see:
- A summary like "1 of 5 caught up," with a bar showing who's caught up, who's behind, and who hasn't read anything yet
- A status under each member's name: Caught up, 1 unread, or No reads yet
- A switch to List members least caught up first, so you can quickly see who might need a reminder

❓ What "Seen" Means
- A person has seen a message if they opened the chat after it was posted. Opening a chat counts as reading everything in it, so it doesn't mean they read every word.
- Replies in threads aren't included.
- Read Status doesn't show when someone last opened the chat.
⚙️ How to Turn Read Status Off (Admins)
Read status is on by default. To turn it off for your whole app:
- Tap the ⚡ lightning bolt and open App Settings & Design.
- Find Group Chat Read Status and select Off.

When it's off, no one can see who has read messages, including admins. Everyone's own unread counts and the New messages line still work. See Catching Up on Unread Messages in Group Chats.
The change may take a moment to show up, until the app reloads its settings.
