Why can’t I process a refund?

Why was my refund not processed?

If you attempted to issue a refund but the family did not receive it, the most common reason is that your Stripe account did not have enough available funds to process the refund.

When a family makes a payment, the funds first enter your Stripe balance. Stripe then transfers those funds to your connected bank account based on your payout schedule. Once the money has been paid out to your bank account, it is no longer available in Stripe to be used for refunds.

For example:

  • A family pays a $500 tuition invoice.
  • Stripe transfers the $500 to your bank account.
  • Later, you attempt to issue a $500 refund.
  • Stripe displays an “Insufficient funds in your Stripe balance to refund this amount” error, and the refund is not completed.

How do I complete the refund?

You have two options:

Option 1: Wait for new payments

As new payments are received, your Stripe balance will increase. Once your available Stripe balance is high enough, return to the original payment and retry the refund.

Option 2: Add funds to your Stripe balance

You can manually add money to your Stripe balance (if available for your Stripe account). Once the funds become available, return to the original payment and retry the refund.

Will Stripe automatically process the refund once funds are available?

Usually no. If the refund previously failed due to insufficient funds, you will typically need to return to the original payment and submit the refund again.

How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

To avoid refund delays, consider keeping a small buffer in your Stripe balance or adjusting your payout schedule so that more funds remain available in Stripe before being transferred to your bank account.

How can I verify whether my refund was successful?

After submitting a refund, always check the refund status in Stripe. A refund request is not complete until the status shows Succeeded.
